The term "single parent" represents a wide range of people in our community - mothers, fathers, custodial, non-custodial, widows, widowers and never married. But the common theme in this group is the fact all are parents, no matter the situation that brought them to that point.

Started in February 1998, the Harris YMCA in Charlotte has maintained a group for single parent families and has served over 200+ families. The primary focus is simply this - being the best parent we can be with God's help and support from each other. The group has included ongoing classes designed to better parenting skills and provide an open group forum for general support and discussion. The group has provided various activities that always center around the family unit to include children.

In December, 2003, the Single Parent Family Support Group became Genesis Family, Inc. and received it's 501(c)3 status as a part of the National Heritage Foundation. The group currently meets at Forest Hill Church on Park Road, Charlotte, NC for ongoing meetings and continues to work in cooperation with the Charlotte YMCA in developing programs and promote awareness of the needs of single parent families in our community.

Since 1998, the group has been lead by Larry Taylor, who has a background in non-profit development and administration. Larry is also a single dad of a 16 year old daughter, Meredith.
